DiaPS presented at ISPAD 2024 in Lisbon

From 16 to 19 October 2024, the DiaPS – Diabetes and Sport Peer Support project was presented at the ISPAD Annual Conference held in Lisbon, Portugal. The event gathered leading experts, healthcare professionals, researchers, and organisations from around the world, all focused on advancing care and quality of life for people living with diabetes.

Participation in ISPAD 2024 marked an important step for the DiaPS project, positioning it within a global context and connecting it with the wider diabetes and medical community.

Part of the #dedoc° symposium

As part of the conference programme, DiaPS was presented during the #dedoc° symposium “What we wish you knew — and why”, which provided a unique platform for people living with diabetes to directly address a global audience of healthcare professionals, researchers, and industry representatives.

The #dedoc° symposia are recognised as part of the official programme of major diabetes conferences and aim to highlight real-life perspectives and topics relevant to the diabetes community. Importantly, these sessions are made accessible beyond the traditional conference setting, being streamed live on platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, and dedoc.org, allowing the global diabetes community to follow and engage in real time.

Within this framework, Ines Jakopanec presented the DiaPS project, introducing it as an EU-funded initiative focused on supporting people with diabetes in sport through digital peer support.

Bringing sport and diabetes into the global conversation

During the presentation, DiaPS was introduced as an innovative solution that connects the fields of sport, health, and digital support. The project drew attention for its focus on peer-to-peer interaction and its aim to address everyday challenges faced by individuals living with Type 1 Diabetes who wish to stay active in sport.

The exchange with participants highlighted the importance of combining clinical knowledge with lived experience — an approach that lies at the core of the DiaPS platform.

Showcasing the digital solution in development

Project partners also presented the ongoing development of the DiaPS digital application, including its key functionalities and user-focused design. The platform is being developed in collaboration with developers and UX/UI designers to ensure an intuitive and accessible user experience.

Particular interest was shown in the integration of educational content and community features, allowing users to both learn and connect within the same environment.

Building connections with the global diabetes community

ISPAD 2024 provided a valuable opportunity to engage directly with members of the international diabetes community, gather feedback, and explore potential future collaborations.

The discussions confirmed a strong need for solutions that go beyond clinical settings — supporting people with diabetes in their daily lives, including their participation in sport.

Participation in ISPAD represents an important step in increasing the visibility of the DiaPS project and ensuring that it reflects the needs of both the sports and medical communities.
