Sports & Diabetes – Tackling Diabetes with Sport

From DiaPS to DiaCro Sport: Building a Stronger Sports Community for People Living with Diabetes

One of the most valuable outcomes of the work carried out through diabetes and sport initiatives in Croatia has been the creation of a lasting community that continues to support people living with diabetes beyond individual projects and events.

Building on years of experience gained through DiaEuro activities, international cooperation, and the development of the DiaPS – Diabetes and Sport Peer Support project, HAŠK Mladost and the DiaEuroCro team took an important step forward with the establishment of the DiaCro Sport Association.

The association was founded with a clear vision: to promote active lifestyles, inclusion, and equal opportunities in sport for people living with diabetes.

Supporting people with diabetes through sport

DiaCro Sport was established to encourage and support people living with diabetes in participating in sport and physical activity at all levels – from recreational activities to competitive sport.

The association aims to create opportunities for children, young people, and adults living with diabetes to discover their potential through sport while building confidence, independence, and healthy habits.

Particular attention is given to supporting children and young people living with Type 1 Diabetes, as well as individuals living with Type 2 Diabetes who are involved in sport professionally, competitively, or recreationally.

Promoting inclusion and awareness

One of the key goals of DiaCro Sport is to demonstrate that diabetes should never be a barrier to participation in sport or society.

Through education, awareness-raising activities, and cooperation with sports organisations, the association works to promote the inclusion of athletes living with diabetes and to challenge misconceptions surrounding the condition.

At the same time, DiaCro Sport advocates for a broader understanding of the positive impact that physical activity can have on diabetes management. Sport and exercise are not only safe for people living with diabetes but can also contribute significantly to improving glycaemic control, overall health, and quality of life.

Creating opportunities for future generations

In addition to supporting participation in sport, the association seeks to encourage research, knowledge sharing, and the development of new initiatives that connect diabetes, health, and physical activity.

By creating a supportive community and providing positive role models, DiaCro Sport aims to inspire future generations of athletes living with diabetes and show that an active lifestyle is both achievable and beneficial.

A shared vision with DiaPS

The values promoted by DiaCro Sport closely align with the objectives of the DiaPS project. Both initiatives are built on the belief that people living with diabetes should have access to reliable information, supportive communities, and equal opportunities to participate in sport.

While DiaPS provides digital tools and peer support at the European level, DiaCro Sport represents a strong local commitment to continuing this mission and ensuring that people living with diabetes have the support they need to stay active, connected, and empowered.
